How these brushes are different Most pencil brushes use opacity and flow to determine the strength of their mark making and density. Texture is often an afterthought and feels tacked on. My real pencil brushes have locked opacity. They use a painstainkingly tweaked combinations of texture and flow settings to create the most realistic marks possible through a range of real pencil hardnesses.

Press hard and more tooth fills in for a more opaque stroke. Press light and the stroke shows more paper. Use a harder pencil lead and it will be, well, harder to fill in the paper’s virtual tooth. Use a softer lead and the tooth fills in more readily.

I use these brushes for almost all of my Photoshop sketching and have included new “real” style red and blue layout pencil variants as well as my more artificial, digital pencil brushes as a bonus. All of this for less than the cost of a real pack of sketching pencils!

Finally figured out how to decently record screen-capture video, so here’s a time-lapse process video of some inking I did for the current t-shirt design I’m working on. Can’t zoom out to show you the whole image, so you’ll just have to be content with watching me noodle on the details for now.
Inked in Photoshop, using a Wacom Intuos 3 tablet. playback at 4x speed.

Music featured is “Tandem” by Protest the Hero and “Secret Brick Chicken” by Keith Merrow, neither of which I own the copyrights to, but they’re good, so if you like ‘em, buy em!

Japanese coffee artist Kazuki Yamamoto (previously featured here) is still hard at work in Osaka creating cappuccinos that are almost too cute to drink. Lately he’s been perfecting his 3D creations.

Not content with decorative 2D images, under Kazuki’s skilled hands frothy milk rises out of the mugs to resemble any number of pop culture characters that are sure to put a smile on your face.

Order two drinks and your beverages might be served up appearing to interact with each other. Coffee is already a great pick-me-up, but these kawaii beverages might be verging on over-the-counter anti-depressant territory.

The nine circles of hell from Dante’s Inferno recreated in Lego by Mihai Mihu

I. LIMBO: A place of monotony, here the souls are punished to wander in restless existence while they moan helplessly in echoes between the ruins of a temple.

II. LUST: Surrounded by erotic representations, those overcome by lust are forced to watch and experience disgusting things, ultimately being condemned to drown in the menstrual river.

III. GLUTTONY: The circle itself is a living abomination, a hellish digestive system revealing horrific faces with mouths ready to devour the gluttons over and over for eternity.

IV. GREED: This pompous place is reserved for the punishment of the greedy ones.

V. ANGER: In this depressing place the souls are trapped in the swamp, they can’t move and they cannot manifest their frustration which is making them even more angry.

VI. HERESY: The giant demon watches closely over his fire pit, dwarfing the damned that are dragging the new arrivals in the boiling lava. Those who committed the greatest sins against God are getting a special treatment inside the temple where they are doomed to burn for eternity in the scorching flames.

VII. VIOLENCE: A place of intense torture where the horrific screams of the damned are eternally accompanied by the hellish beats of drums.

VIII. FRAUD: In Fraud the Demons enjoy altering the shape of souls, this is how they feed.

IX. TREACHERY: Lucifer lies here chained by the Angelic Seal which keeps him captive in the frozen environment.
